- Pain is the "disease"
- Believe the patient
- Complete a thorough history and physical exam
- Elevate the pain threshold
- use pharmacological management of chronic pain
Nine Principles of Narcotic Use for Chronic Pain
When using narcotics to control pain, nine principles are important
to remember:
- Use agnostic as first line therapy
- Do not stay with weak narcotics if pain persists
- Use oral route whenever possible
- Use round the clock dosing
- never administer narcotics on a p.r.n. basis
- Titrate dose individually
- Use adjuvant medications
- Use narcotics as one part of total pain control
- Follow the World Health Organization Pain Ladder
