Relieving the Fear of Pain

Communication is an important tool in relieving pain and reducing fear.  Since fear is a major component of total pain, we can help relive patient fears by:
  • Encouraging the patient to identify and talk about specific fears
  • Providing accurate information to counteract myths and unrealistic beliefs or expectations
  • Encouraging patient participation in treatment plans
  • Setting measurable, achievable goals
  • Ensuring consistency and availability of staff
  • Providing reassurance about staff commitment to relief of pain

Patients often want answers to questions such as:

  • Why do I hurt so much?
  • Will the pain get worse?
  • How bad will the pain get?
  • Will I lose control and go crazy with pain?
  • Will pain relievers help me?
  • What will pain relievers do to me?  Will I get addicted, dopey, sleep all the time?  Be out of it all the time?
